The Soil biodiversity and health laboratory of Dr. Cristina Lazcano at the University of California Davis is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the areas of soil health and microbial ecology. The successful candidate will work within the framework of a large, multidisciplinary project investigating the effects of climate-smart irrigation and cover crops on drought, fertility, and structural resilience in almond systems. The postdoctoral scholar will be directly advised by Dr Lazcano and co-advised by Dr. Mallika Nocco at the Department of Land Air and Water resources.
The successful candidate will study the effects of deep root irrigation (DRI), pressure compensated subsurface drip irrigation (PSDI) and cover crops on almond root architecture, and soil health, including changes in the soil and rhizosphere microbiome, C sequestration and nutrient cycling.
For this, the postdoctoral scholar will use ground penetrating radar, a non-destructive method to study root architecture, DNA marker-based methodology for the study of the soil microbiome, as well as a standardized set of soil health measurements.
All research will be carried out in 14 commercial almond fields, and therefore the candidate will be expected to interact with the growers directly using strong oral and interpersonal outreach education skills.
It is expected that the postdoc will lead 2-3 high-impact peer reviewed scientific articles per year with the supervision of Dr. Lazcano and collaborators. In addition, it is expected that the postdoc will mentor graduate and undergraduate students as well as organize extension/outreach activities and products.
The ideal candidate has expertise in soil or rhizosphere science, high throughput sequencing, bioinformatics, and multivariate data analysis.
We will look for candidates with demonstrated experience in writing and publication of scientific manuscripts, excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills as well as demonstrated leadership and willingness to work in a collaborative environment.
We are especially interested in candidates that will be able to think independently and critically.
Responsibilities:
A. Design of sampling campaign and direct communication with collaborating growers. Collection of soil samples in remote field locations.
B. Processing and analysis of soil sampling.
C. Processing of soil and plant samples for DNA extraction and sequencing.
D. Data curation and analysis, mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
E. Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
F. Presentation at professional conferences.
